Self-reliance, commitment, and concern for others are important themes throughout Trailmark Expeditions, and the Maine wilderness is the perfect setting for these. We first travel to New Hampshire's Franconia Notch State Park to begin exploring the forest of the North Country. Our first adventure is a three-day land based backpacking expedition into Maine's Mahoosuc Range on the famous Appalachian Trail. We will tackle by foot the glacially cut boulder valley deemed the Mahoosuc Notch. We then head to the northeast corner of Baxter State Park where we begin provisioning for our upcoming canoe expedition. We begin with a necessary canoe skills workshop on Grand Lake Matagamon to prepare for the exciting rapids of the Penobscot River. The expedition itself includes four days on the East Branch of the Penobscot River. With the right weather conditions, we then hike above tree line, crossing Mt. Katahdin's infamous Knife's Edge to the mountain summit and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

This expedition is one of the most physically demanding programs that Trailmark Expeditions offers. The remoteness and intensity of this trip requires participants to be mature, responsible, and physically able. Your participation on this program should be taken seriously. With that being said, Inland Maine Woods/Penobscot River Expedition will be an adventure paralleled by none. This is an adventure that transforms teenagers into young adults.
